Why should I get a circumcision?
- Paraphimosis – This is an emergency situation where the foreskin becomes stuck and is retracted for an extended period of time. This cuts off blood flow to the head of the penis and can result in severe consequences. Urgent circumcision is recommended.
- Phimosis – When the foreskin is too tight, it may be unable to be fully retracted. This can result in discomfort, scarring, and infection.
- Balanitis – If you have frequent infections of the foreskin, circumcision may be recommended as a preventative measure.
Studies suggest that circumcision can also help to prevent urinary tract infections, sexually transmitted infections, and penile cancer.
You may also be considering circumcision for other reasons: personal, aesthetic, hygiene, or even religious.
About the procedure
For adult patients, surgical circumcision is often used. You will be given a local anaesthetic – possibly a general anaesthetic – to relieve any pain. In total, the circumcision will take between 30 minutes to an hour and you will be released on the same day after our doctors have cleared you.
The risks of this procedure are minimal and include bleeding, infection, a patient’s reaction to the anaesthesia, and foreskin issues. This last concern can be mitigated by choosing an experienced circumcision doctor in Melbourne, such as the ones at West Side Circumcision Clinic.
Getting an adult circumcision with us is simple. We apply an EMLA cream to numb the penis area around 30 minutes before the procedure. The circumcision itself takes no more than 20 minutes, unless more stitching is needed.
After that, all you have to do is wait for another 30 minutes in the sitting area and you’ll be good to go!
