Circumcision is usually performed for religious or cultural reasons. As such, our doctors are fully supportive of our patients’ needs and are able to accomodate any requirement you may have.
Recent research has shown that circumcision has medical benefits for conditions such as frequent infections of the foreskin (balanitis) or a tight foreskin that is unable to be fully retracted from the head of the penis (phimosis). Circumcision is also recommended by doctors as a treatment for paraphimosis, a medical emergency which occurs when the foreskin is unable to be pulled over the tip of the penis. This only occurs in uncircumcised males and, if left too long, can cut off blood flow in the penis and result in great pain.
On top of this, there is also a lower risk of contracting urinary tract infections. Circumcision may also help to prevent the contraction of sexually transmitted diseases, reduce the risk of penile cancer, and make personal hygiene far simpler. In many areas around the world, circumcision is used as a strategy to prevent the spread of HIV and other serious infection.
Overall, the removal of the foreskin is a very personal choice. You need to consider the best interest of your son (or yourself, if you are an older patient) and determine what path will be the right one. It is important to consider the benefits and risks and to talk through any concerns with an expert. We are here to answer any questions you may have and ensure you have all the information you need to decide on the surgery.
Circumcision is a low-risk surgery; 1-2% of patients may experience abnormal bleeding or swelling, but this can usually be managed by an experienced doctor. Overall, professionals in Australia have deemed the procedure to be safe for patients young and old.
The skin covering the head of the penis can be removed through a variety of methods. Over the years, our Melbourne doctors have perfected their technique and regularly perform a number of circumcision procedures. These include the Pollock technique, Plastibell, ShangRing, a surgical incision to remove the foreskin, and more. Procedures differ depending on the patient’s circumstances; you will be able to find out more about the specific surgery from your doctor during your consultation.
Generally, the procedure is performed under a local anaesthetic. For older patients, however, a general anaesthetic may be used to mitigate discomfort. The procedure is quite short – ten minutes for infants and under an hour for older patients – and we will keep patients shortly afterwards to determine that they are safe for release.
For the first few days after the procedure, the patient may experience some discomfort and soreness around the penis area. If there is any severe bleeding or swelling, call our clinic immediately and your doctor will advise you from there.
Your doctor will schedule a follow-up in the next few days to check in and make sure that your recovery is going as planned. To heal properly, you need to ensure that the wound is kept clean; after the first couple of days, wash using water only and replace the dressing regularly (for infants, after every diaper change). You may wish to put Vaseline or antibiotic cream on the tip of the penis under the dressing to protect the wound.
Adult patients should refrain from physical exercise for four weeks and sexual activity for a minimum of six weeks to ensure that the penis is fully healed. Your doctor will be able to give you more specific care instructions after your procedure.
There is no age limit for circumcision. Although most people think of babies when they think about the procedure, boys of all ages are able to be circumcised.
Circumcision costs are dependant on how old the patient is and the anaesthetic used.
The initial appointment and some of the procedure will be covered by Medicare; however, there will still be out-of-pocket costs due on the day.
Here in Australia, hospitals will generally only perform circumcision if there is a medical need. However, parents of male babies can decide that they wish to have their son circumcised due to religion, culture, or any other reason. If you have decided you would like to circumcise your child, it is always best to go with a specialist like the ones at West Side Circumcision Clinic.
There is no evidence that circumcision impairs performance. In fact, some studies have found that circumcised men are able to last longer and provide their partners with greater pleasure.
